Many of you know me already but for those of you who don't, I'd like to tell you about myself. I've been a fashion photographer since the early 80's. When I first entered the business I assisted some great photographers like Oliverio Tosconi, Patrick Demarchelier, Mike Reinhardt and even Helmut Newton. It was so inspiring I couldn't wait to get out on my own. I was in Milan building my career with magazines like Amica, Grazia, and Vogue Bambini, when I got the big breakthrough call from Alexander Leiberman, editorial director at American Vogue and fashion industry icon. Needless to say I was on the next plane home to NYC! I contributed to Vogue for the next three years and established myself in the American market. Next came Harper's Bazaar and amazing opportunities to travel the globe. Paris collections, Caribbean tan every winter, fresh editorial every month.....I had arrived. Editorial brings commercial clients and the trappings of success are, I must say, pure delight. I love this business.
Today I enjoy a variety of interests, all involving my first love, photography. I continue to work commercially with clients like Discovery Channel, Tahari and my long time friends at Soho Publishing, to name a few. I have recently combined my extensive knowledge of antique watches and my photography by working with top New York collectors to catalogue their inventory. The opportunity to handle and work with these rare, priceless watches has been a true thrill for me, being a collector myself.
I should also mention that I have discovered, and subsequently developed, a talent for shooting real people. This came as somewhat of a surprise to me after working with models for so many years. The challenge of drawing out a non-professional's true personality, for the camera, is absolutely invigorating. I have become very involved in the performing arts community shooting actors, dancers, singers and artists. This gives me great pleasure.
That's about it, I guess. Thanks for listening. I would love to meet as many of you as possible and maybe we can work together sometime. Shoot me a mail at paul@paulamato.com
Peace out,
Paul
